Challenges of teaching context

In the era of globalization nowadays, learning a foreign language is very important. It is essential for people to integrate into the development of the whole world. Among hundreds of different languages, English has become the official language which is spoken worldwide (Martinez-Flor, 2004). The process of learning and teaching a foreign language is not simple. It requires both learner and teacher‘s perseverance. This is a basic factor leading to the success of conquering a new language. However, in the process of teaching a foreign language, there are some challenges that teachers have to face . Firstly, considering long -standing level, there is a lack of interest among English teachers (Stephen and Hilary, 2004). It is true for monolingual English teachers who speak only English language in the classroom. Adding to this point, students’ language is different, and they need to learn English from teacher. It is more understanding in the case of foreign teacher teaching native students. Some times, there is a mistake happening among them. Secondly, Stephen and Hilary (2004) said that many English teachers really have very little formal training in linguistic and literacy education. As a result, there is a wrong match between what needed to be taught and what actually to be taught.

Students’ strengths and weaknesses

The students who participate in this teaching method include students from English major who come from all universities and college, students from other majors who want to become English teachers, and teachers who are teaching English at all levels. For those students, they already have English language. Therefore, it is not so much difficult in communication in English among teacher and students during training process. However, there is a weakness of students when they were trained in different majors. For example, some of them are English major students, some of others are from other majors and the others are English teachers. Consequently, their English knowledge is different from each other.

TESOL teaching method.

TESOL means teaching English to speakers of other languages. TESOL provides learners professional teaching methods that are related to high application and practice, but no bias on academic item. Hence, it is different from the other teaching programs in Vietnam. This method is widespread used over 80 nations, and is accepted by more than one thousand of universities and foreign language centers over the world. As a result, students who finish Tesol program will have high opportunity of getting good jobs in any country on the global.

The relevance and appropriateness of Tesol teaching method for students.

As mentioned above, students of Tesol teaching program compose of people who come from different majors, and be able to speak English. The hope to join in Tesol teaching program is to improve their pedagogical skills to become good English teachers. When participating in Tesol teaching program, students has opportunity to show their ability by really practicing learning and teaching methods. This method is scientific and realistic. An article said “Tesol Class strives to become the home of practical, unbiased, library of teacher training information on the Internet. Language teaching is a personal journey for each educator, so we are not interested in changing an educator’s teaching philosophy. Tesol Class hopes you find language teaching strategies that match your style, so you can be the best educator possible”. Consequently, Tesol method can educate students to obtain teaching style which is suitable to them. In Tesol method, student can experience teaching methods, assessment methods, the development of curriculum and materials. Besides, students have chance to face with challenges in English teaching process, for instance, their pupils not cooperating in English teaching and learning. From that, it helps them understand deeply about those challenges and creatively give solutions and answers for challengeable situations.

Application of the principles of Tesol teaching methods.

In general, Tesol teaching program would like to offer students scientific and practical teaching. By this way, students can easily enhance their teaching ability. Consequently, the progress level is quicker than other methods, one of which is to teach theory only. Joining in Tesol teaching program, students are more and more professional. Students can interact with each other as much as possible. Hence, except for teaching style, students can speak English more fluently.
For application of the principles of Tesol teaching method, I have some recommendations, as the following:
The aim of Tesol teaching program is to train students to become professional teachers. Therefore, it is better and better if students are professional in teaching methods. As a result, it is best for them to practice teaching method of listening, speaking, writing and reading regularly. However, the teaching of each skill should be put in the order so that students’ pupils can easily understand and catch the content of lesson. For example, in listening comprehension lesson, firstly teacher should choose the teaching point; then before listening to the listening comprehension passage, the teacher should introduce the topic of the passage. By this way, the teacher is drawing the attention of pupils to the content of passage; consequently, they can be easily able to catch the content of the topic. Next, also before listening to the passage, it is good for the teacher to give questions and the guidance for answering those questions to pupils. In order to understand the content of passage, pupils can understand main ideas first. Certainly, the teacher has responsibility for how to do to help them catch the main content of the passage. It is by dividing the passage into many stages, and then answering questions is a nature. Following the division of passage into many stages, the teacher can continuously divide passage into some sections, then listening and checking the comprehension of pupils after the end of each section. The next suggestion for teacher is to allow pupils listening to the whole passage and completing the task. To have a perfect teaching of listening comprehension, the teacher should present feedback of performance of his or her pupils.
The steps in listening comprehension lesson can be demonstrated in the boxes below:

Practicle issues

The Tesol method used in this paper is for post graduate students. They are teaching English in university or schools, or they graduated from business and administration, for instance. In addition, they graduated from English major, but not in teaching. However, a common point among them is that they can speak English well and have a passion on teaching career. As a result, the materials and syllabus of post -graduate is various from material and syllabus of undergraduate. The material and syllabus must be designed reserving for this group of students. Lesson plans, for example in listening comprehension above, must be in a reasonable order and make students easily to understand, in general how to make students understand lessons most easily and quickly. For classroom, the characteristic of learning is must be in quiet space so that students can hear what teacher is talking. Especially, learning English needs quiet space so much. Thinking of listening to English lesson, you cannot hear what is about if you are put in noisy space. In short, management of classroom decides the quality of lesson. Learning English skills need many related books, CD, Computer or radio, PC, and so on. There is a question that why Tesol teaching method is about method of teaching, but this paragraph is mentioning about English listening and writing skills. Tesol method will teach student the techniques of English teaching and learning. Therefore, during teaching and learning, it is necessary to take English listening in the lesson. It is likely an example demonstrating the techniques of Tesol teaching method.

Through this assignment, audience can see “Using a Selected Method to Teach a Selected Skill for a Selected Group of Students”. A group of students including post graduate students from English major or other majors, students teaching in universities and schools. All of them enter in Tesol teaching program to improve pedagogical skill on the purpose of finding more opportunities in teaching career. In Tesol method, they are taught practical skills in scientific ways. Some literature view of Tesol teaching method program is written in the table to help audience have a more understanding of Tesol method of teaching. Moreover, this paper released the principles of listening comprehension lesson and is demonstrated in boxes. Finally, some practical issues are given in this paper at aim to see needed things for a good Tesol education
